Who Mary Baker Eddy Was
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was a spiritual pioneer. Her work covered the disciplines of science, theology, and medicine. She discovered what she called the Science of Christianity in 1866 after a Bible study led to her healing from serious injuries. This experience shaped her lifelong focus on spiritual healing through prayer and Scripture. In 1879 she founded The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, and her teachings spread to thousands of branch churches in about 80 countries.
The Founding of Christian Science
Eddy’s healing experience led her to look deeper into the principles of Jesus’ teachings and the Bible. She believed she uncovered universal spiritual laws that explained healing and spiritual harmony. This became the foundation of Christian Science, a faith emphasizing prayer-based healing and a close study of Scripture.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
Eddy authored Science and Health, a central text of Christian Science that has sold over ten million copies worldwide. It explains her understanding of biblical principles, spiritual healing, and how the “Science of Christianity” works. Together with the Bible, this book is considered the core textbook of Christian Science teaching.
Her Contributions Beyond the Book
Beyond Science and Health, Eddy created a publishing legacy that includes books, weekly and monthly magazines, and a foreign-language magazine. She also founded The Christian Science Monitor, a newspaper known for its global journalism and Pulitzer Prizes.
Legacy and Global Impact
Mary Baker Eddy’s work influenced not just her own movement but broader conversations about spirituality and healing. Christian Science continues to be studied and practiced around the world, and her writings remain central to those seeking a spiritual approach to understanding health, consciousness, and the Bible.
